From the Desert to the Sea...

Busy news day in and around Los Angeles:

:: L.A. County unveils the design for its new seal, minus the crosses that caused concern with the ACLU. Also gone are the old seal's oil derricks and the goddess Pomona. L.A. Times story here.

:: Also in the L.A. Times: Our kids, breathing SoCal's smog-filled air, are screwed: Despite decades of cleanup efforts that have greatly reduced smog, the amount of air pollution still found in parts of Southern California and elsewhere in the country can stunt lung growth in children, according to the most comprehensive study ever conducted on children's exposure to air pollution.

:: Rosemead becomes the first L.A. County town to approve a Wal-Mart Supercenter -- but the megastore still faces a legal battle.

:: L.A.'s a city of illiterates according to a new study, reports the Daily News: In the Los Angeles region, 53 percent of workers ages 16 and older were deemed functionally illiterate, the study said.

Not good for the City of Angles. Er, Angels. (Rim shot.)

:: Programming Notes: You've experienced the hype. Now see for yourself whether "Joey" lives up to its "Friends" predecessor. (Not quite, but closer than you'd ever expect. 8 p.m., NBC) Then stay tuned for the return of "The Apprentice," which, I must admit, does live up to the hype. The first episode's task, to create a new toy for Mattel, works well... and the Donald is hysterical in his return (both intentionally and unintentionally). (8:30 p.m., NBC)

Then, don't forget to tune in late tonight, at Midnight on KCSN/88.5 FM as Bruddah Mike spins the Hawaiian tunes.
