Can't Live Without My Radio

Winter 2005 Arbritron ratings are in, and big winners in the Los Angeles market include top 40 KIIS-FM and Spanish outlet KSCA-FM, home to emerging morning star Piolin.

Hip-hop KPWR "Power 106" still reigns supreme, although its 12+ ratings dipped slightly (4.7 share of market listeners, down from a 4.9 in fall, followed by talker KFI-AM (4.6, up from 4.4).

KIIS-FM, meanwhile, saw its best book in some time -- likely thanks to a tweak this winter in its playlist. KIIS is now focusing much more of its music on the hip-hop and R&B sound of rivals like Power 106, and it worked: The station (combined with its sister KVVS in the Antelope Valley) posted a 4.6, up from 4.2 in the fall.

KROQ is in fourth, with a 4.2 (up from 4.1), then Spanish KLVE (3.8, down from 4.3) and KSCA (3.6, up from 3.1).

KSCA continues to see its fortunes gain thanks to Piolin -- whose billboard you've seen all over town for months. Piolin is the No. 1 morning personality in Los Angeles, and last year dethroned longtime leader El Cucuy as the top Spanish personality in L.A. radio.

In other Arbitrons, Indie 103.1 (KDLD/KDLE) continues to eke out small numbers, averaging a 0.8 share in winter (up from 0.7 in fall). Same goes for old-school hip-hop outfit KDAY (1.1, up from 1.0).

1150 AM switched to left-leaning KTLK in February, mid-book, so it's too soon to get a full report card -- but the station hasn't made many waves yet. Also, KCBS-FM flipped from Arrow to Jack-FM at the very end of the book, so we won't see numbers until next time.
