Thunder Bolts and Lightning, Very, Very Frightning

Thunder and lightning in Los Angeles? In September? It's official: God is very, very angry at us for the fall TV season. Especially at you, Freddie Prinze Jr.

Premiere week continues tonight... although some lingering summer reality means we have to wait another week for the return of "The Amazing Race" and... yes, "Rodney."

If you're not waiting to see who's crowned the "Big Brother" champ; the new lead singer of INXS; or the "Dancing with the Stars" rematch winner (and don't forget, T-Boz and Chilli finally tell us whether We R Tha Girl), I'd advise you to check out the 9 p.m. NBC tandem of "My Name is Earl" and "The Office."

Yes, you've been bombarded with confusing billboards and obnoxious radio ads for "Earl," but the hype is real: The show is good.

And unfortunately, NBC hasn't been pounding home the fact that "The Office" is back tonight -- and that's too bad, because the season premiere is truly excellent. And dare I say it, continues to stand on its own. Rather than living in the shadows of its UK spawn, the U.S. version of "The Office" is evolving into a truly funny show with some real depth.

Tonight's lineup:

KCBS/2 (CBS):
8 - NCIS
9 - Big Brother 6
10 - Rock Star: INXS

KNBC/4 (NBC):
8 - The Biggest Loser
9 - My Name is Earl (series debut)
9:30 - The Office
10 - Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
