Trojan Tumble

With a Modelo in one hand and the remote in another... and the laptop close by, Martini Republic's joseph did an excellent job last night liveblogging the Rose Bowl.

I was stuck in the office working on a story, so I missed the game (not that I would have watched anyway -- hey, a new episode of "Project Runway" was on) -- but turns out reading joseph's highlights was just as good, if not twenty times better. Some highlights:

5:30: Rose Bowl on January 4, eh? That alone sucks.

6:17 Hey, I know what that was—a Utah Pass! A Utah Pass! But nobody is calling it a Utah Pass. Yet another thing I know that is completely culturally irrelevant and perhaps even obsolete.

6:17: Jesus Christ, how many fumbles are there going to be? I thought they said these team were one and two in the country.

6:58: I’m not just watching television. I’m watching television and blogging. Somehow, the added activity makes the whole situation not more active, but even more passive.

7:13: I’m in love with Emma on the Toyota Prius Hybrid commercial. Google “Emma Toyota Prius Hybrid” and up comes a great quote from Emma Goldman: “If voting changed anything, they’d make it illegal.”

8:08: About the fifteenth reference to one of these two teams beating Michigan—beating them last year, beating them the year before, just beating Michigan. Often highlight clips are from Michigan games. Michigan: the new Washington Generals.

8:38: Twenty-two more minutes and it will be January 5 on the east coast. It always used to freak me out to watch the Rose Bowl from the east coast after having watched it as a child at 2 p.m. on the left coast. It was, like, dark outside in Manhattan when they kicked off in Pasadena. But all that’s out the window now with this January 4 BCS bullshit. It’s dark for everyone now, and it’s even going to be midnight for some. Christ, the little things you miss about life!

9:05: Fourth and short two, on the Texas 42, Texas time out, Carroll deciding whether or not to go for it. Typically, when they think about it, they go for it.

9:06: They go for it. They didn’t get it. Texas football. 2:09 left. Fifty-eight yards between Texas and a national championship. After four hours, it’s finally all about football.

As you know by now, Texas upset USC, 41-38. And so ends a 34-game winning streak, the sixth longest ever,

Head over to Martini Republic to read the whole thing. Meanwhile, no reaction yet from USC uberfan Boi from Troy. I blame the demotion of Stephanie Edwards on the Rose Parade -- it turned the whole natural order of things upside down.
