Rate-A-Restaurant, #98 in a series
Restaurant: Citizen Smith
Location: 1600 N. Cahuenga Blvd. (Hollywood)
Type of restaurant: American
We stipulated: Maria and I wanted to try a new place for her birthday. I'd actually already attended a work event here, but now wanted to sample it during normal dining hours.
What we ordered: Jalapeno Mac and Cheese ($8), Fried chicken ($18), Roasted veggie salad ($12)
High point: So much for our diet. Maria and I finished the Jalapeno Mac and Cheese in no time -- the blend of spice, cheese and crunchiness was perfect. Also, the Thomas Schoos-designed restaurant is a spectacle to see. Avoid the crowds and attitude by checking it out at lunch.
Low point: For some reason, the front doors were left open -- making the dining room a bit too chilly. And our desire to check out the back patio was stymied by some sort of reality show being shot back there. Ahh, Hollywood.
Overall impression: Service was spotty at first -- we asked for spinach with the chicken and got fries -- but it dramatically approved by the end of lunch. (Perhaps she heard us plotting out this Rate a Restaurant?) But overall, the food was tasty -- and there was plenty to bring home for dinner, making for two meals. We also enjoyed the urban feel to the joint -- it wouldn't feel out of place in New York.
Chance we will go back: I could see returning for business lunches in the near future.
