Franklin Avenue Finally Watches Movies You Saw Many, Many Months Ago
Pre-Blogger Baby, we rarely saw movies in the theater (there were too many other things to do, like checking out new restaurants). So post-Blogger Baby, our movie-going completely ground to a halt. And with so much good TV to catch -- not to mention our perpetual exhaustion -- a 2-hour DVD is still a time commitment we just can't accomodate.
It's a rare victory when we can actually make it through a movie without dozing off. We managed to do so this Saturday, as we finally caught "Crash."
We finally checked it out for several reasons: (1) It was set in Los Angeles; (2) It won the Best Picture Academy Award; and (3) It was taking up valuable space on the TiVo.
I had a sneaking suspicion I'd have problems with the film... and my suspicions were confirmed. Trite, trite, trite. If only L.A.'s race problems were that overt and on the surface -- hell, we'd be able to combat it. There's no complexity to this movie: It's just a bunch of characters taking turns spouting racist proclamations, then redeeming themselves by doing something good (or vice versa, in the case of Ryan Phillipe's character). It's a shame, because L.A. is such a unique city, with unique problems when it comes to race. I saw none of that in "Crash." And the depiction of Asians was downright ridiculous. Over all, a disappointment for Angeleno audiences.
Watch out for furture takes on movies you already saw several months, maybe even years, ago.
