Nope, turns out Franklin Avenue isn't named after Benjamin. Or Roosevelt (neither president nor "Sesame Street" character).
Lynne Jewell, editor of the Los Feliz Improvement Assn. newsletter "The Observer," is trying to track down the history of our favorite street -- but has so far only come up with scant info:
Do you know for whom Franklin Ave.'s named? Everyone assumes Ben F. But [L.A. Times reporter] Cecilia Rassmussen checked it out for me and she came up with Freeman Franklin, a land-holder. Ever heard of him? I was just wondering if you have any back story on the street naming. Thanks for any assistance you can give us.
I did a quick Google search, and there isn't anything to be found on "Freeman Franklin" anywhere on the 'Net. Any of you amateur L.A. historians have info on the mystery behind Franklin Avenue?
