Is Hollywood & Highland the Ugliest Building in Los Angeles?

(Pic by Curbed LA.)

Well, Curbed LA (or, more specifically, its panel of judges) does -- the site just named Hollywood & Highland the winner of its Uugliest Building in Los Angeles award.

They write:

It's not based purely on aesthetics, that we can all agree. There are other factors - the pedestrian unfriendliness of the Highland side of the structure. The confusing and somewhat nauseating escalators. The portions of the mall that remain empty of shops and tourists despite being at one of the most visited intersections in the City. The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. The mish-mash of architectural styles. The Egyptian reliefs and elephants.

And then there are the tourists. Oy! Never has a greater display of mid-westerners, comprised of fat women wearing capri pants and their skinny husbands been gathered into one locale than at Hollywood & Highland.

I agree, H&H is hideous and shockingly ill-designed. (How could anyone think the Awards Court -- where few shoppers roam -- was a good idea?)

Yet... I gotta believe there are other, even uglier and less functional buildings out there. Although a terrible folly from the moment it opened, Hollywood & Highland at least helped lead the way in the Hollywood renaissance. And it replaced an eye sore of a building plus... well, I can't even remember what else, it was so forgettable.

Also, the loud, larger-than-life H&H finally gave tourists looking for Hollywood a place where they might at least feel they found something.

And hey, a place that introduced Angelenos to the joy of Beard Papa cream puffs couldn't be all bad. Your thoughts?
