Going AC-Free During the Hottest Week of the Year

(Flickr pics by Kimberkit.)

We're doing our part to help the power crunch this week... er, admittedly, unintentionally.

Just two years after it was installed, our AC unit put on its own little fireworks show on July 4. It all started in the afternoon on Independence Day, when we turned on the unit and noticed it wasn't putting out any cool air. That evening, I checked the fuse -- and noticed it'd been tripped. I turned it back on -- and POP! CRACKLE! Sparks flew, and suddenly a screeching noise came out of the unit -- followed by a cloud of metallic-smelling mist (guessing it's the freon gas).

Now, it's dead. Just in time for our 90-degree-plus weather of the past few days. Yes, we believe it's still under warranty.

At least we're inadvertently doing what the state is asking us to do, as LA Biz Observed's Mark Lacter notes:

The California Independent System Operator, which controls most of the state power grid, has asked customers to conserve or postpone energy until this evening. Conditions were expected to be "challenging" from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Things are supposed to cool down by weekend. In the meantime, we're avoiding our sauna of a house and spending more time outdoors -- where it's actually cooler.
