Rate-A-Restaurant, #143 in a series
Restaurant: Frjtz
Location: 570 Hayes St. (San Francisco)
Type of restaurant: Belgian Fries and lunch
They stipulated: Buy a small fries, get one dip free. A large will get you two. Dips include flavors such as grilled eggplant mayo, creamy wasabi mayo, chipotle remoulade, curry ketchup and strawberry-hoisin BBQ.
We stipulated: We love New York's Pommes Frites, and this sounded like a good approximation and a cool new place to hit for lunch. Our friend Karen (who you may, ahem, remember from the "Love Story" video) was driving us around SF, and was interested in trying Frjtz out as well.
What we ordered: Large fries ($4.50) with ginger orange mayo and spicy yogurt peanut sauce. Also: Tizano savory crepe with rosemary chicken ($7); Kahlo salad (mixed greens with tomatoes, onions, avocados tossed with a raspberry balsamic dressing, $7); Bosch salad (spring mix with quinoa, veggie salami, green onion, tomato, avocado, mango, cilantro, tossed in a tangerine balsamic vinaigrette, $8.50).
High point: I know Maria and Karen enjoyed their salads, but I particularly liked the crepe. And the belgian fries were decent, although I'm not sure we picked the best sauces.
Low point: On the flip side, they don't compare to Pommes Frites' amazing fries in the East Village. And he wait for a table at Frjtz meant we weren't so sure we'd have a place to actually sit and eat.
Overall impression: Still, an economical lunch, tasty and worth the visit. And how about that cool, neon bathroom!
Chance we will go back:: If we happen to be close by during our next SF visit, perhaps. But on to the next experience!
