America's Next Top Downtown Dwellers
The first three seasons of UPN's hit reality series, "America's Next Top Model," took place in New York, where contestants lived together in a variety of glammed-out Manhattan hotel suites.
But for this spring's edition, "Top Model" headed west, to Los Angeles -- but this crop didn't stay in some plush Pacific Palisades estate or Beverly Hills mansion. As the Downtown News writes, they were put up in a funky loft downtown:
Their new digs was a 12,000-square-foot loft belonging to local clothing designer Magnus Walker and his wife and partner Karen Caid, who converted the two-story building into a modernist palace complete with exposed beams, brick walls and polished hardwood floors.
Though the couple lived in the space for about five years, they now rent it regularly for filming...
Though the stunning loft instantly caught the attention of host and supermodel Tyra Banks, the girls' initial reaction to the Downtown neighborhood was less than complimentary. They appeared frightened as they traversed the Arts District. One referred to the area as the "ghetto."
The paper notes that the first round of this year's "American Idol" competish took place at the Orpheum theatre on Broadway, while Bravo's "Manhunt" was set at the downtown Standard hotel.
